web usability notes

Technology/People's Needs

  • Offer text as an alternative to audio, subtitles option for video, & text-to-voice reading aloud option for visually impaired if you want to provide accessibility.

  • For long download times, provide a status bar so people don't think it's frozen.

  • Assume users don't know terms like plug-ins, HTML, bandwidth, etc.

  • Design with users' common settings in mind -no pop-ups, automatically detect bandwidths or use smaller bandwidths.

  • Don't make users choose between video players.

  • Scroll bars should have top & bottom arrows & a scroll indicator & be big enough .

  • Sound - start softly & gradually get louder with a way to adjust sound and turn it on or off .

  • Audio & video clips should be less than a minute -- almost never more than 5 minutes.

  • Before adding desing elements ask: does this element simplify the user's task? add value?
